چکیده

Template-free polymorph discrimination of CaCO(3) can be easily realized by a so-called double-jet method in aqueous solution under mild conditions, which may shed new light on the controlled crystallization of other inorganic material systems in which polymorph selection is of critical importance or is highly relevant to their properties.

Effects of time, temperature and precursor on solid state synthesis of α-TCP

The effects of solid state synthesis process parameters (time and temperature) and primary calcium precursor on the amount of produced α-tricalcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4)2 or α -TCP) have been investigated. α-TCP was synthesized by firing of stoichiometric amount of calcium carbonate and monetite in first group and calcium carbonate and brushite in the second group, once at 1350°C for 3,6,8,16 h d...

4.6-billion-year-old aragonite and its implications for understanding the geological record of Ca-carbonate

Owing to its diagenetic instability, aragonite is rare in the geological record and almost entirely absent from pre-carboniferous sedimentary rocks. The former presence of this mineral in older deposits has to be inferred from petrographic, chemical or isotopic proxies. Crystals of aragonite that formed around 4563 million years ago occur in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, showing that under...

Assembly Synthesis of Sheet-like Calcite Array and Stable- Vaterite by Supported Liquid Membrane

CaCO3 can crystallize as calcite, aragonite and vaterite. Calcite and aragonite are the most common biologically formed CaCO3 polymorphs, and vaterite is transformed into calcite via a solvent mediated process. Calcium carbonate makes an attractive model mineral for studies, since the morphology of CaCO3 has been the subject to control in biomineralization processes. And control of vaterite als...

Empirically testing vaterite structural models using neutron diffraction and thermal analysis

Otoliths, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) ear bones, are among the most commonly used age and growth structures of fishes. Most fish otoliths are comprised of the most dense CaCO3 polymorph, aragonite. Sturgeon otoliths, in contrast, have been characterized as the rare and structurally enigmatic polymorph, vaterite-a metastable polymorph of CaCO3. Vaterite is an important material ranging from biomed...

Spinning up the polymorphs of calcium carbonate

Controlling the growth of the polymorphs of calcium carbonate is important in understanding the changing environmental conditions in the oceans. Aragonite is the main polymorph in the inner shells of marine organisms, and can be readily converted to calcite, which is the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate. Both of these polymorphs are significantly more stable than vaterite, which is th...
